According to the MSU Graphic Standards Guidelines passed by the Board of Trustees on October 24, 1997, "The official seal of the university, which features Old College Hall, is reserved for use by the Michigan State University Board of Trustees and university officers."

The Secretary of the Board of Trustees, as stated in the Michigan State University Bylaws, "shall be the custodian of the corporate seal and shall cause its imprint to be placed wherever appropriate."
